HAPPY WORLD TURTLE DAY!

The Freshwater Turtle team in Ontario, led by Christina Davy, wish you all a very happy World Turtle Day! They are doing their part to ensure that Ontario’s threatened turtle populations do not disappear forever. Read about their work here. Spotted frog rearing is coming along nicely. The tadpoles are growing very quickly! They are devouring their diet of leafy greens and bloodworms. We are testing the viability of captive laid tadpoles compared to wild laid tadpoles. So far there isn’t a noticeable distinction but only closer examination and time will tell if there is [...]

Boo! – Its a Frog?

The oregon spotted frog season has wound up and we are wintering frogs not big enough to release. Everything is going very well. Of all the 360 eggs we raised this year only 10 were too small to be released and 123 were released. We also had an occurrence of transient albinisim, where some of [...]

Hopping towards the end of season

Wrapping up frog season for this year with marking! We collected all the frogs that we raised this year and marked them based on their parentage so that we can track which genetic lines are more successful with mark recapture. Out of 360 eggs we successfully reared 264 metamorphs, with only 3 tadpoles not morphed [...]

Tadpole Firsts

The frog project is progressing along very well considering the cold and rainy weather we have been having in the early part of the summer in BC. Some of the tadpoles this year displayed albinisim during a large part of their tadpole development. This was concerning to us as in the past albino tadpoles have [...]

Metamorphasis!

Since last update the tadpoles have been growing like crazy. We are running trials to see if the different genetic lines we are breeding in captivity are producing tadpoles that metamorphose at the same rate. Tadpoles from different lines are assigned a random tank number for rearing and treated identically. Each week a subsample of [...]

Spotted Frog Tadpoles

I am progressing on rearing the tadpoles that were laid in captivity this year. I am comparing different genetic lines to ensure that the hybridization of two different populations produces fit individuals as was predicted from the genetic work done by the recovery team. I have also had the opportunity to speak at one of [...]

Oregon Spotted Frog Producing Masses of Eggs

Just a quick update on what is going on with the Oregon spotted frog program this year so far. I am prepping the enclosures to receive eggs from the captive breeding program on Wednesday. We currently have two genetic classes that we are breeding in captivity; a Mariah/Mariah class, and a Mariah/Mountian class (being different [...]
