A snapping turtle lays her eggs into the nest she has carefully dug out to hold them…

This has been a weird year for nesting turtles – first nesting was very slow to begin, thanks to the extremely long, cold winter, and once it did start it stayed slow. It’s possible that many females simply didn’t come out of their long hibernation with enough fat stores left to then produce a huge clutch of eggs, and that they are “skipping” this year. If so, we can probably look forward to an extremely busy nesting season in 2015! For now, the southern Ontario turtle team is working hard to protect every nest we find, and to make sure that this year’s eggs can incubate safely. In only a few short weeks, we will have hatchlings!
