As the nights turn colder and the snow infringes upon the prairie grass, our swift fox survey crews are in full swing. In Canada two camera trap crews and two live trap crews are slowly progressing across the townships/ranges that encompass the known swift fox populations. Likewise, two Montana crews are navigating through the north of Montana. With long sleepless nights, cold days of equipment set up, and incidental sightings there is an initial inkling of success. The overall numbers of swift foxes will not be known for some time as the survey is still underway into the New Year. Hence it is with great enthusiasm the field crews, researchers, project coordinators and others alike, are confident to say that this small yet extremely fast carnivore, the swift fox, still resides on the prairies.
