SHADES to open inTorontoFebruary 27
TORONTO,Feb. 22, 2016/CNW/ – In collaboration with ten of the country’s most vibrant artists, Burt’s Bees Canada announces a first-of-its-kind event featuring original artwork created using its new collection of lipsticks.
The artwork, dubbed SHADES is made with and inspired by the pigment from Burt’s Bees line of 100% naturally formulated lipstick – a new, colour-rich and moisturizing product made using beeswax, moringa oil and raspberry seed oil – set to launch in April. SHADES will be on display atArta GalleryinToronto’shistoric Distillery District fromFebruary 27 to March 11.
All pieces will be available for purchase, with proceeds going to Wildlife Preservation Canada.
Wildlife Preservation Canada, which aims to save species at risk of extinction, has been partnering with Burt’s Bees since 2012 in an effort to save the rusty-patched and other at-risk native bumblebees through population surveys, conservation breeding, and pollinator-friendly wildflower plantings.
Burt’s Bees’ SHADES is a unique way to further that goal both through showcasing art and a 100% naturally formulated lipstick that’s kinder to your body.
“SHADES is a perfect intersection of art, beauty, and nature,” saysCarolyn Hungatefrom Burt’s Bees Canada. “It’s an opportunity for Canadians to experience and purchase unique creations by some of the country’s brightest artistic talent while at the same time showing their support for a worthy cause. We’ve tried to strike a balance between our commitment to conservation efforts and sustainability and our natural sense of playfulness.”
VancouverartistTaisha Tealsays she jumped at the chance to be a part of the special event.
“My brother just became a beekeeper last summer so it kind of hit close to home,” she says. “This is my own way of helping prevent the bees from going extinct.”
Working with the pigments was a unique experience for her, one that left her asking questions about her own relationship with our furry, winged friends and how best to represent that relationship.
“Everyone looks at a piece of art differently and as an artist you’re trying to create a message,” she says. “My goal is to send the message that this is a really important cause to support.”
Montreal’sAntoine Tavaglione, who has developed a cult following surrounding his much-touted pop art says he couldn’t pass up the chance to contribute a unique piece to the SHADES exhibit.
“My style is very cartoon-oriented so they thought it’d be a good fit for the exhibit,” he says. “The colours are really cool, I loved using the tones of pinks and magentas from the lipsticks – it’s right up my alley, very playful.”
While Tavaglione stayed mum on the details of his piece, he says his technique was to match the pantones to his acrylic paints. In addition to the 40-by-40 piece of artwork he created for the event, theMontrealartist will be on hand at the SHADES launch in the Distillery District. He’ll be one of several artists painting in front of visitors to the gallery.
“People get a chance to see the process from A to Z,” says theMontrealpop artist. “It’s not every day you get to see an artist create a piece from scratch and complete within a couple hours – I think it will be really fun.”
