in Canada. However, as human development expands, critical habitat is impacted.<\/p>\n<p>Hibernation sites (known as \u201chibernaculum\u201d), are some of the most sensitive critical habitat for the species.\u00a0 Snakes are often moved out of harm\u2019s way when human development encroaches on their habitat, but the long-term effectiveness of this technique is not proven.<\/p>\n<p>In order to test whether translocations can save snakes whose hibernation sites are\u00a0<a class=\"glossaryLink\" href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/blog\/glossary\/threatened\/\" data-cmtooltip=\"A wildlife species likely to become endangered if limiting factors are not reversed.\">threatened<\/a> by development, we are undertaking trial translocations. Snakes are moved in the fall, just prior to hibernation. Fencing around the hibernation site simulates its destruction, and funnel traps allow us to trap and identify all snakes entering and leaving the complex to gain a complete picture of the population of Massasaugas using this site.<\/p>\n<p>The project includes determining how faithful Massasaugas are to their hibernation sites and whether translocating snakes to other sites might be effective.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n<section class='av_toggle_section av-lf321bh7-bc34ae3578cb3d5a7af9ec08a1e58db4'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div role=\"tablist\" class=\"single_toggle\" data-tags=\"{All} \"  ><p id='toggle-toggle-id-2' data-fake-id='#toggle-id-2' class='toggler  av-title-above av-inherit-border-color'  itemprop=\"headline\"  role='tab' tabindex='0' aria-controls='toggle-id-2' data-slide-speed=\"200\" data-title=\"Results\" data-title-open=\"\" data-aria_collapsed=\"Click to expand: Results\" data-aria_expanded=\"Click to collapse: Results\">Results<span class=\"toggle_icon\"><span class=\"vert_icon\"><\/span><span class=\"hor_icon\"><\/span><\/span><\/p><div id='toggle-id-2' aria-labelledby='toggle-toggle-id-2' role='region' class='toggle_wrap  av-title-above'  ><div class='toggle_content invers-color av-inherit-border-color'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Results from an initial three-year radiotracking study show that while overwinter survival of translocated adults is high, this method has a low likelihood of long-term success, owing to the strong bond adults have with their original hibernation site<\/p>\n<p>As the next step, in 2016 we translocated 41 newly hatched snakes (known as neonates), so that the young snake\u2019s initial bond is forged at the selected site. Since graduating from the University of Guelph with a BSc in Wildlife Biology &#038; Conservation, he has worked with two distinct regional populations of massasaugas: eastern Georgian Bay; and the Ojibway Prairie Complex. Working out of Killbear Provincial Park, Eric was first exposed to massasaugas as a park naturalist and would go on to become a researcher, continuing an ongoing study on roadkill mitigation within the park. After joining Wildlife Preservation Canada as a field biologist, he spent the next two years studying this\u00a0<a class=\"glossaryLink\" href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/glossary\/endangered\/\" data-cmtooltip=\"(E) A wildlife species facing imminent extirpation or extinction.\">menac\u00e9s<\/a>\u00a0population as part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/ojibway-prairie-reptile-recovery\/\">Ojibway Prairie Reptile Recovery Program<\/a>.
