Many of the remaining sub-populations of kangaroo rat inhabiting these islands are too small to remain viable over time, while even the larger ones are subject to the dangers of inbreeding and disasters such as epidemics or drought. That\u2019s why the recovery plans developed by Alberta\u2019s Ord\u2019s Kangaroo Rat Recovery Team and Environment Canada included\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.qa.caorda\/glossary\/translocation\/\">translocation<\/a>\u00a0as a potential conservation tool. At the time, however, little was known about the feasibility of\u00a0<a class=\"glossaryLink\" href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.qa.caorda\/glossary\/translocation\/\" data-cmtooltip=\"Conservation translocation is a species recovery technique that involves the intentional movement and release of individuals to improve the conservation status of the species, and\/or restore natural ecosystem functions or processes.\u00a0 Conservation translocations can include releases either within or outside the species native range.\u00a0 Translocations may move animals sourced from wild or captive populations.\">translocation<\/a>, since it had never been attempted for this species. In response, Wildlife Preservation Canada funded a three-year, hands-on study beginning in 2012. Each spring, a small group of kangaroo rats were translocated and soft-released into artificial underground nests, which provided food and shelter. They were then monitored to determine whether they could successfully establish themselves and survive at the new site.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n<section class='av_toggle_section av-2rw06zr-6ca86c83d469adf4deb5d15e802b6a52'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div role=\"tablist\" class=\"single_toggle\" data-tags=\"{All} \"  ><p id='toggle-toggle-id-2' data-fake-id='#toggle-id-2' class='toggler  av-title-above av-inherit-border-color'  itemprop=\"headline\"  role='tab' tabindex='0' aria-controls='toggle-id-2' data-slide-speed=\"200\" data-title=\"Results\" data-title-open=\"\" data-aria_collapsed=\"Click to expand: Results\" data-aria_expanded=\"Click to collapse: Results\">Results<span class=\"toggle_icon\"><span class=\"vert_icon\"><\/span><span class=\"hor_icon\"><\/span><\/span><\/p><div id='toggle-id-2' aria-labelledby='toggle-toggle-id-2' role='region' class='toggle_wrap  av-title-above'  ><div class='toggle_content invers-color av-inherit-border-color'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>In 2012, researchers translocated seven kangaroo rats. However, by late August, none were present.<\/p>\n<p>The following year, another seven kangaroo rats were translocated, three of which were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/glossary\/radio-tagged\/\">radio tagged<\/a>. One of the radio-tagged rats relocated within about 100 metres of the release site, where it eventually established a permanent home and became pregnant \u2014 a strong indicator that the translocation was successful.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, the research team discovered the pregnant offspring of a rat that had been translocated in 2013 \u2014 a benchmark of high translocation success. Meanwhile, one of the three animals translocated in 2014 remained at the release site throughout the season, establishing an extensive burrow system.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n<section class='av_toggle_section av-2r1g887-0805d2b118f621b368bcb277d022386b'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div role=\"tablist\" class=\"single_toggle\" data-tags=\"{All} \"  ><p id='toggle-toggle-id-3' data-fake-id='#toggle-id-3' class='toggler  av-title-above av-inherit-border-color'  itemprop=\"headline\"  role='tab' tabindex='0' aria-controls='toggle-id-3' data-slide-speed=\"200\" data-title=\"Impact\" data-title-open=\"\" data-aria_collapsed=\"Click to expand: Impact\" data-aria_expanded=\"Click to collapse: Impact\">Impact<span class=\"toggle_icon\"><span class=\"vert_icon\"><\/span><span class=\"hor_icon\"><\/span><\/span><\/p><div id='toggle-id-3' aria-labelledby='toggle-toggle-id-3' role='region' class='toggle_wrap  av-title-above'  ><div class='toggle_content invers-color av-inherit-border-color'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Results of the study suggest that translocation and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/glossary\/soft-release\/\">soft release<\/a>\u00a0of Ord\u2019s kangaroo rats may give conservation managers a powerful tool to help them reduce the effects of habitat fragmentation and stabilize the population. However, due to the precarious state of the population, the study sample sizes were too small to compare the survival rate of the translocated rats with the rest of the population. Darren Bender is an Associate Professor at the University of Calgary in the Departments of Geography and Biological Sciences.\u00a0He has a PhD in Biology from Carleton University and completed post-doctoral training in the Department of Fishery and Wildlife Biology at Colorado State University. He describes himself as a habitat ecologist with particular interest in sand dunes on the Canadian prairies and the species that inhabit them, especially the critically\u00a0<a class=\"glossaryLink\" href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/blog\/glossary\/endangered\/\" data-cmtooltip=\"(E) A wildlife species facing imminent extirpation or extinction.\">menac\u00e9s<\/a>\u00a0Ord\u2019s kangaroo rat.\u00a0Darren first worked on the Ord\u2019s kangaroo rat in Canada in 1995 as a summer student.
