A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/glossary\/conservation-breeding\/\">l'\u00e9levage de conservation<\/a>\u00a0program coupled with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/glossary\/reintroduction\/\">r\u00e9introduction<\/a>\u00a0efforts have improved those numbers significantly.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005, Wildlife Preservation Canada funded research by former\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/2016\/about-us-2\/people\/canadasnewnoahs\/\">No\u00e9 de Conservation de la faune au Canada<\/a>\u00a0Diane Casimir into the reproductive behaviour of marmots, in order to inform and improve management techniques at\u00a0<a class=\"glossaryLink\" href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/glossary\/conservation-breeding\/\" data-cmtooltip=\"The process of\u00a0breeding\u00a0animals in controlled environments within well-defined settings, such as wildlife reserves, zoos and other conservation\u00a0facilities.\">l'\u00e9levage de conservation<\/a>\u00a0facilities. Using cameras placed within breeding enclosures, Diane was able to compare the behaviour of marmots from the breeding program with that of wild breeding pairs, using over 15,500 hours of observation. By monitoring these behaviours, facilities are better able to assess pairings to increase reproductive success and thus the number of animals available for\u00a0<a class=\"glossaryLink\" href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/glossary\/reintroduction\/\" data-cmtooltip=\"Species recovery technique that involves the intentional movement and release of individuals into its native range, from which it has previously disappeared.\u00a0 Reintroduction aims to re-establish viable populations of species within their native range.\">r\u00e9introduction<\/a>. Her work also identified environmental and management variables associated with reproductive success. Between 2003 and 2015, the wild population of Vancouver Island marmots grew tenfold, from 30 to 300. By bolstering the wild population of Vancouver Island marmots with new, healthy pups, we have given this species a new lease on life.
