itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>In the wetlands of B.C.\u2019s Fraser Valley, western painted turtles face many challenges, especially as eggs and tiny hatchlings. With no shortage of hungry predators and no care from their parents once they\u2019ve hatched, only a few young turtles survive to become adults. When you add human activity to the mix, the rate of survival can be so low that a population becomes unsustainable. Since 2012, we\u2019ve been working to improve those odds. In addition to protecting nests, we collect eggs from vulnerable turtle nests, artificially incubate them and head-start new hatchlings before releasing them back into the wild.\u2060<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><div  class='flex_column av-7g1h2us-ff63ede58ca38981b6c77d0104102cb1 av_one_full  avia-builder-el-7  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_hr  first flex_column_div  column-top-margin'     ><section  class='av_textblock_section av-mplet1e4-efbdf76b6e4237457eeb0a54d6097e03'   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Thinking about the end of the western painted turtle nesting season has me feeling&#8230; itchy. We were <strong><em>so<\/em><\/strong> fortunate to experience not one but three flooding events from a large snow pack this year. This meant the Fraser River rose three times, and that allowed the mosquito eggs on the shore more opportunities to hatch out&#8230; and bite us. The mosquitoes haven\u2019t been this bad since 2011.<\/p>\n<p>It makes nest monitoring a little challenging when you\u2019re swarmed by mosquitoes but you\u2019re trying to focus on the turtles. The turtles were a struggle this year too. It wasn\u2019t their fault, the weather just wasn\u2019t in their favour.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" id=\"style-css-av-80o31p0-21ca280dc36d9813212d29fc0fa234cf\">\n#top .hr.hr-invisible.av-80o31p0-21ca280dc36d9813212d29fc0fa234cf{\nheight:15px;\n}\n<\/style>\n<div  class='hr av-80o31p0-21ca280dc36d9813212d29fc0fa234cf hr-invisible  avia-builder-el-9  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_full'><span class='hr-inner'><span class=\"hr-inner-style\"><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div  class='flex_column av-12ljtqs-17c732923361226a3ed53d6b2daf778f av_one_full  avia-builder-el-10  el_after_av_hr  el_before_av_hr  first flex_column_div'     ><section  class='av_textblock_section av-q0ttck-e62eb4cf966a42a5888d48fe66b62bea'   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Western painted turtles won\u2019t nest in cold weather or when it\u2019s raining. They like it hot and sunny, but BC was hit with \u201cJuneuary\u201d this year so it was a slow start for the turtles.<\/p>\n<p>One of the reasons I became involved in conservation work is because I loved the idea of working on a population scale \u2013 working to build up a population of an endangered species to the point that they\u2019re no longer endangered. I think a lot of my colleges share that passion as well, so we were all concerned about this year\u2019s nesting season.<\/p>\n<p>When animals only breed one time a year it can feel like you only have one shot, one opportunity&#8230; to seize everything you ever wanted, in one moment&#8230; would you capture it, or just let it slip? (sorry, I got carried away with my Eminem reference, back to turtles!).<\/p>\n<p>The trouble is, we can\u2019t do anything about the weather. So we had to wait it out. In July things got better and the turtles didn\u2019t waste a moment making up for lost time. What started out as a slow year ended really well! We observed 62 turtles successfully nesting \u2013 our highest so far \u2013 and collected eggs for head starting as well as protected nests that remain in the wild from predators.<\/p>\n<p>We probably also got a record number of mosquito bites, but we weren\u2019t counting, we were itching. The mosquitoes were everywhere. They followed us outside. They fly into our cars. They wait on our windshields for us to come out like some kind of horror movie. My husband admitted that nest monitoring was not the most favourite of the jobs I\u2019ve had. One morning, after I had been out nest monitoring, he went to get into the car and then ran back into the house 30 seconds later to grab paper towels, saying \u201cOh my gosh, there are so many mosquitoes in there.\u201d He said there were 40.\u00a0 I think he was being a little dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>As hard as the mosquitoes are to deal with, the bites fade and the itching stops, but our successful nest monitoring season will feel good for a long time after.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" We were <strong><em>so<\/em><\/strong> fortunate to experience not one but three flooding events from a large snow pack this year. This meant the Fraser River rose three times, and that allowed the mosquito eggs on the shore more opportunities to hatch out&#8230; and bite us. The mosquitoes haven\u2019t been this bad since 2011.<\/p>\n<p>It makes nest monitoring a little challenging when you\u2019re swarmed by mosquitoes but you\u2019re trying to focus on the turtles. The turtles were a struggle this year too. They like it hot and sunny, but BC was hit with \u201cJuneuary\u201d this year so it was a slow start for the turtles.<\/p>\n<p>One of the reasons I became involved in conservation work is because I loved the idea of working on a population scale \u2013 working to build up a population of an endangered species to the point that they\u2019re no longer endangered. I think a lot of my colleges share that passion as well, so we were all concerned about this year\u2019s nesting season.<\/p>\n<p>When animals only breed one time a year it can feel like you only have one shot, one opportunity&#8230; to seize everything you ever wanted, in one moment&#8230; would you capture it, or just let it slip? (sorry, I got carried away with my Eminem reference, back to turtles!).<\/p>\n<p>The trouble is, we can\u2019t do anything about the weather. So we had to wait it out. In July things got better and the turtles didn\u2019t waste a moment making up for lost time. What started out as a slow year ended really well! We observed 62 turtles successfully nesting \u2013 our highest so far \u2013 and collected eggs for head starting as well as protected nests that remain in the wild from predators.<\/p>\n<p>We probably also got a record number of mosquito bites, but we weren\u2019t counting, we were itching. The mosquitoes were everywhere. They followed us outside. They fly into our cars. They wait on our windshields for us to come out like some kind of horror movie. My husband admitted that nest monitoring was not the most favourite of the jobs I\u2019ve had.
