With no shortage of hungry predators and no care from their parents once they\u2019ve hatched, only a few young turtles survive to become adults. When you add human activity to the mix, the rate of survival can be so low that a population becomes unsustainable. Since 2012, we\u2019ve been working to improve those odds. In addition to protecting nests, we collect eggs from vulnerable turtle nests, artificially incubate them and head-start new hatchlings before releasing them back into the wild.\u2060<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><div  class='flex_column av-94wt471-dd7dc345e9d9624617a488a98debbca4 av_one_full  avia-builder-el-7  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_full  first flex_column_div  column-top-margin'     ><section  class='av_textblock_section av-mrtm2qwo-8a341a5d2cf403c051ed132ffb614a90'   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Through all the challenges of 2020 it\u2019s been important to find inspiration and positivity where we can. For us here on the Fraser Valley Wetland Recovery team, these snippets of brilliance come to us on release days! There is no greater treat than introducing our head started western painted turtles to their new wetland habitats. These days remind us to take the time to feel the sun on our skin, take a deep breath of fresh air and reflect on how grateful we are to be doing the work that we do. It&#8217;s important for us all to take the time to recharge in nature. We encourage you to get out and do just that, where ever you are. Our wild turtle populations will be entering hibernation. However, at our head starting facility, there will continue to be a flurry of activity! This year, we are over-wintering 360 Western painted turtles. Because these turtles are housed indoors, they will continue to be active and grow through the colder winter months.
