itemprop=\"text\" ><p class=\"p1\"><b>What is the Taylor\u2019s Checkerspot Butterfly Recovery Program?<\/b>\u00a0An environmental indicator for the health of the entire ecosystem, this special butterfly was once widespread in the San Juan Islands, southern Vancouver Island and the surrounding islands of British Columbia. It was believed to have disappeared from Canada until 2005, when 15 checkerspots were observed on Denman Island in B.C.\u2019s Gulf Islands. Since then WPC has been working to support the butterfly by building the wild population in B.C. through conservation breeding in our program located at the Greater Vancouver Zoo, and helping partner efforts that restore and maintain habitat for the species.\u2060<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><div  class='flex_column av-aj09acg-883a8352965f1eefa21488ee079eeede av_one_full  avia-builder-el-7  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_full  first flex_column_div  column-top-margin'     ><section  class='av_textblock_section av-mrw6gc0t-758724ad2295868a42fb544320d7669c'   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>Over 1200 Taylor\u2019s checkerspot caterpillars have been released into habitat on Hornby Island to return endangered butterflies to historic habitat.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another year of\u00a0 conservation breeding our Taylor\u2019s checkerspot butterflies has reached the most exciting step \u2013 releasing our WPC raised animals into their habitat. Though releasing an animal may conjure dramatic images of flinging open a cage, it looks more like a delicate art project when it involves caterpillars.<\/p>\n<p>With paintbrushes, tiny caterpillars are brushed out of their little plastic cups and placed into carefully selected micro-patches of habitat. Then a small flag is labelled and staked into the ground at each release point. This action was repeated many times, by many hands this March, and resulted in over 1200 caterpillars being released into restored habitat. The caterpillars released this year are only the second cohort to be placed on Hornby Island.
