endangered animals is not easy. Keen observations of frog behaviour by WPC lead biologist, Andrea Gielens, and the courage to trial new techniques resulted in our releasing\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/blog\/record-setting-spring-for-canadas-most-endangered-amphibian\/\">more than 20,000 Oregon spotted frogs and froglets to the Fraser Valley<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0The previous highest number was 1800! Reintroduced turtles are breeding in the wild again<\/h3>\n<p>Another milestone for the Fraser River Valley recovery program was the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/blog\/confessions-of-a-turtle-conservation-research-assistant\/\"><strong>first confirmed records of nesting in the wild by five western painted turtle females\u00a0that had come from the WPC headstarting program<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0Since it takes 6-10 years for a female painted turtle to reach maturity this project does require a slow and steady approach for recovery. This year we released\u00a0123 young turtles to the wild. Loggerhead shrikes are breeding\u00a0better\u00a0in the wild<\/h3>\n<p>Intensive field surveys by WPC found 24 wild pairs of eastern loggerhead shrikes nesting in Canada and these pairs\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/blog\/wpc-cribs-eastern-loggerhead-shrike-edition\/\">fledged 78 young shrikes, the highest wild production ever recorded<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0Captive-bred and released birds made up at least 13% of the wild population. Pairs with one parent coming from our conservation breeding program\u00a0contributed 22% of observed fledglings. Breakthrough breeding for the Taylor&#8217;s checkerspot butterfly<\/h3>\n<p>Close observation of butterflies by dedicated staff led to a<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/blog\/breeding-butterflies-in-bc\/\">breakthrough in identifying ideal conditions for breeding Taylor\u2019s checkerspot butterflies<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0This led to the production of a record 5,265 caterpillars\u00a0at the conservation breeding facilities. Earlier in the year we released 1,257 caterpillars.
