itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>Qu'est-ce que le programme de No\u00e9 du Canada ? <\/strong>Since 1988, the Canada\u2019s New Noah program has provided young conservation biologists in Canada the opportunity of a lifetime. Each year, WPC selects a dedicated biologist from applicants across Canada to undertake a 3-month course at the Durrell Conservation Academy in the U.K. followed by a 6-month internship on the islands of Mauritius and Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. See more of her posts here.<\/p>\n<p>One of the things I\u2019ve found the most interesting about living in Mauritius is that their entirely extinct dodo bird, Raphus cucullatus, is everywhere. It starts when the entry card you fill out on your flight is covered in dodo drawings. Shops sell row upon row of tiny dodo figurines in all shapes and sizes, dodo jewelry, dodo towels, dodo shirts, dodo rum, and products stamped with the colourful icon \u201cMade in Dodoland\u201d. You can stay at Dodo Apartments, grab at beer at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyingdodo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flying Dodo<\/a> brewery, and even play the Mauritius-themed escape game <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dodoquest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dodoquest<\/a>, in which you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dodoquest.com\/#!safe-dodo-mauritus-quest\/cifr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Save the Last Dodos<\/a> and find a dodo egg.<\/p>\n<p>But you cannot\u2026actually see a dodo. They\u2019ve been gone since about 1690. Except apparently in the minds of googlers, as \u201crelated searches\u201d that pop up include \u201cwhere do dodo birds live\u201d and \u201cdodo found 2015\u201d. You could be forgiven for thinking the dodo is alive and well, however. It is a powerful and well-loved symbol. A stylized dodo is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durrell.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">logo for Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust<\/a>. Their latest campaign used \u201c<a class=\"mfp-iframe lightbox-added\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tvD4fRHstuU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Lonely Dodo<\/a>\u201c, a tragic solitaire-playing cartoon, to fundraise for their endangered species projects. David Quammen used it in his book, poetically describing the kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/concis.io\/about\/inspirations\/the-song-of-the-dodo-by-david-quammen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one-last-sad-dodo-dies-alone-in-a-cold-cave<\/a> situation that makes conservationists feel like throwing up. This one extinct species has fascinated<a href=\"https:\/\/twilightbeasts.org\/2015\/08\/28\/the-last-squawk-of-the-dodo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> magazine writers, blogging scientists, academic researchers<\/a>, and definitely Mauritians. Why, though?
