WPC has participated in burrowing owl recovery programs since 1995, in Saskatchewan, BC and now in Manitoba with the Manitoba Burrowing Owl Recovery Program. The conservation techniques used in the program have been developed over the years, with proven results. There are several grassland bird specialities in this part of the province. The iconic burrowing owl tops the list for many birders who flock to the southwest corner to get a glimpse of one. \u00a0Burrowing owls are charismatic little owls weighting only about 150g. Both males and female owls are a similar size and are a speckled brown colour that is perfect for camouflage. Contrary to their name, they cannot actually dig their own burrows and rely on burrowing mammals such as ground squirrels, badgers and foxes to dig burrows in grasslands\u00a0 &#8211; i.e. pasturelands in souythwestern Manitoba. The \u00a0Manitoba Burrowing Owl Recovery Program works with landowners to install artificial nest burrows in suitable nesting locations, made of plastic weeping tile and a bucket to protect owl families from digging predators.<\/p>\n<p>These are the types of burrows that we use to reintroduce conservation-bred pairs. Photo: Jessica Riach<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Once pairs have an established nest, the enclosure is removed and they are able to hunt for food on their own, and avoid predators.<\/p>\n<p>The Manitoba Burrowing Owl Recovery Program has six pairs of conservation-release owls set up in enclosures on private land in southwestern Manitoba. class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><h2>The Burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia)<\/h2>\n<p>La chev\u00eache des terriers est l'une des plus petites esp\u00e8ces de chouettes, qui se distingue par ses tr\u00e8s longues pattes et sa queue courte. Elle tire son nom de son habitude de nicher dans des terriers creus\u00e9s par des animaux tels que les \u00e9cureuils terrestres, les blaireaux et les chiens de prairie. On la surnomme aussi \u00ab chouette Howdy \u00bb en raison de leur habitude de hocher la t\u00eate d'avant en arri\u00e8re en signe de r\u00e9v\u00e9rence, un comportement qui leur permet probablement d'\u00e9valuer les distances depuis diff\u00e9rents points de vue. Les jeunes chouettes dans le nid \u00e9mettent un son de cliquetis similaire \u00e0 celui des serpents \u00e0 sonnettes pour \u00e9loigner les pr\u00e9dateurs. La chev\u00eache des terriers est nocturne, bien que, contrairement \u00e0 d'autres chouettes, elle soit \u00e9galement active dans une certaine mesure pendant la journ\u00e9e.
