spells ecological disaster. Ninety per cent of all flowering plants \u2014 including most of the fruits and vegetables in your fridge \u2014 need these pollinators in order to reproduce. Until the causes of these declines can be reversed, conservation breeding and reintroduction is the only way to safeguard at-risk bumble bees. Today, WPC is the only organization in Canada rebuilding wild bee populations through conservation breeding. Thanks to recent breakthroughs, we\u2019ve figured out how to dramatically increase the number of queens we produce. Through conservation breeding, annual large-scale population surveys, community science, engaging in education and outreach, and collaborating on important research, WPC is a leader in bumble bee conservation. With several of our North American species assessed to be in decline, it\u2019s critical that we monitor our species.<\/p>\n<p>Are you curious what has come from a decade of bumble bee population surveys in Ontario? Where have we looked for bumble bees you ask? We have visited many different types of sites, for example provincial and national parks, conservation areas, city parks, and even roadsides that have suitable bumble bee habitats (e.g., lots of flowers!). We primarily conduct surveys in the early spring as queens emerge from overwintering \u2013 allowing us to collect wild queens for our conservation breeding program before they initiate colonies in the wild.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div><div  class='flex_column av-3ccx1fh-41676078486d8e9ed4de791a3866db58 av_one_full  avia-builder-el-12  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_full  first flex_column_div  column-top-margin'     ><section  class='av_textblock_section av-5x5qo7x-213ef9363096d1175833956936828f8b'   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><h5><strong>How do surveys work?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-lfx0ikf7-98a5ea9e83db75781f1fcc40ccc09eb6'   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>With crews stationed in city hubs like Guelph, Huntsville, Sudbury, and Thunder Bay \u2013we conduct timed, catch and release netting surveys (non-lethal), where we canvas sites as a team to see who we can observe. Making up about 30% of all bumble bees we\u2019ve seen over the years (nearly 8000 records!), without a doubt it\u2019s our most observed species. Another significant portion of our records go to the tri-coloured bumble bee (B. ternarius) and the two-spotted bumble bee (B. bimaculatus).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n\n<style itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>There are two species we found in their native range of Ontario, which we\u2019ve only observed in just a single survey year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The black and gold bumble bee (B. auricomus) which was just observed for the first time this year, but we did record several individuals<\/li>\n<li>The indiscriminate bumble bee (B. insularis), we have only recorded two confirmed individuals in 2018.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to those species above, we\u2019ve also been able to observe some rare or fairly uncommon species in these regions such as the Fernald\u2019s cuckoo bumble bee (B. flavidus) and the frigid bumble bee (B. frigidus).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br Since then, she has worked a variety of roles leading monitoring surveys, research projects, and community outreach both in Ontario and Alberta. Currently she manages the field work and outreach components of the Bumble Bee Recovery Program. Tiffani completed her MEnvSc in Conservation and Biodiversity at the University of Toronto and comes from a background of ecology and conservation biology.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n\n<style
