from flies and wasps but surprisingly they can share a lot of traits, especially since some flies try to mimic bees!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We can&#8217;t necessarily use colours to differentiate them. Note that males have longer antennae than females so if you notice a bee with especially long antennae, you may have found a male!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pollen-collecting hairs which are referred to as scopa<\/strong> \u2013 bees collect pollen for protein, so they have evolved special branched hairs that are very efficient at collecting pollen. Right: Male long-horned bee Photo: eamonccorbett. <u>Note: male bees have longer antennae than females, and long-horned male bees have especially long antennae.<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #50863d;\">Flies have:<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>One pair of wings<\/strong> \u2013 Unlike bees and wasps they only have one pair of wings instead of two.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shorter antennae than bees and wasps <\/strong>\u2013 You often won\u2019t be able to see the antennae at all on a fly, and if you will notice they are much smaller than wasp and bee antennae.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No pollen-collecting hairs (scopa)<\/strong> \u2013 Flies don\u2019t eat pollen for protein, instead they eat other insects, decaying animals or animal waste for their protein so they don\u2019t need special pollen-collecting hairs.
