pr\u00e9cipit\u00e9e de la population sauvage de pie-gri\u00e8che migratrice de l'Est dans les ann\u00e9es 1990, Environnement Canada a invit\u00e9 Conservation de la faune au Canada \u00e0 se joindre \u00e0 l'effort de r\u00e9tablissement multi-partenaires en 2001. Depuis, la taille de la population sauvage a fluctu\u00e9. Des \u00e9tudes ont montr\u00e9 que bien que l'effort de r\u00e9tablissement ait emp\u00each\u00e9 l'esp\u00e8ce de dispara\u00eetre du Canada, plus de travail est n\u00e9cessaire pour identifier et aborder les causes du d\u00e9clin de l'esp\u00e8ce. CFC travaille pour emp\u00eacher la pie-gri\u00e8che migratrice de l'Est de dispara\u00eetre en renfor\u00e7ant la population sauvage en Ontario, et en \u00e9tudiant l'esp\u00e8ce pour en apprendre davantage sur les menaces qu'elle fait face.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- close content main div --><\/div><\/div><div id='av_section_3'  class='avia-section av-c5wa7dj-79b3f10496d2fde3f19d7d08ce741e76 main_color avia-section-no-padding avia-no-border-styling  avia-builder-el-7  el_after_av_section  el_before_av_section  blog-inner avia-bg-style-scroll container_wrap fullsize'  ><div class='container av-section-cont-open' ><div class='template-page content  av-content-full alpha units'><div class='post-entry post-entry-type-page post-entry-43040'><div class='entry-content-wrapper clearfix'>\n<div  class='flex_column av-4xzdp3-f13fe73f0bce7c72cfcdcecfe8543c84 av_one_full  avia-builder-el-8  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  first flex_column_div'     ><p><section  class='av_textblock_section av-152vihj-8f1f26714ec88b9143aaa710f40a1b04'   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>A new group of conservation-bred loggerhead shrikes are off to join the wild population after another successful summer of WPC\u2019s<strong> hacking<\/strong> program (and no, I don\u2019t mean computer hacking!).<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does hacking mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In conservation, <strong>hacking<\/strong> refers to the practice of raising young birds in an environment that allows for them to hone their hunting and flight skills, as well as view their natural environment from an area safe from predators before they face the world on their own. For endangered eastern loggerhead shrikes, this means we place the young born in our conservation breeding program a mesh-sided enclosure in suitable habitat.<\/p>\n<p>Within these specially-designed enclosures, the shrikes have natural areas of cover in the form of hawthorn trees. The hawthorn trees allow the shrikes to practice their signature feeding technique \u2013 impaling their prey, giving them the nickname \u201cbutcher birds\u201d. After an appropriate period adjusting to their new environment and learning to catch prey, shrikes that appear to be suitable candidates for release are fitted with a unique combination of coloured leg bands, or a MOTUS radio transmitter. The colour bands allows individual birds to be identified in future years if they are observed returning to Ontario after migration, while the radio transmitters allow for more detailed tracking of a bird\u2019s migration route.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Release day!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On release day, a large door is opened on the side of the enclosures, and the shrikes exit into their new world at their own pace. His experience working with birds includes performing various types of surveys, monitoring nests, banding, and rehabilitation.
