proud to bring its expertise to this awareness-raising effort<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Guelph, ON \/ April 15<\/b><b>, 2024 \/<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> On April 15, Canada Post began rolling out new stamps featuring the country\u2019s most endangered amphibian: the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/species\/oregon-spotted-frog\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grenouille macul\u00e9e de l'Oregon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In Canada, this speckled species is found only in British Columbia\u2019s Lower Fraser Valley, where just a few hundred individuals remain in a handful of small, widely scattered populations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To ensure the scientific accuracy of the images and the supplemental information that comes with each pack of stamps, Canada Post tapped the expertise of Wildlife Preservation Canada (WPC) \u2014 a leader in frog conservation. Since 2010, WPC has been pioneering recovery efforts for this amphibian, breeding and reintroducing Oregon spotted tadpoles and froglets into B.C.\u2019s wetlands to re-establish viable populations in the wild.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to 2021, a good year of conservation breeding would produce roughly 1,500 tadpoles. But by constantly testing new techniques, the team pioneered a new approach for introducing males to females in carefully designed \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/blog\/breeding-success-in-the-love-tub\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">love tubs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d As a result, WPC now consistently produces more than 20,000 tadpoles for release to bolster wild populations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a global first, WPC\u2019s team also developed effective <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/blog\/chytrid-bath-video\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment protocols to combat chytrid fungus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a lethal disease that can decimate Oregon spotted frogs, and has been responsible for frog extinctions around the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Lance Woolaver Jr., WPC\u2019s executive director, welcomes the attention that Canada Post\u2019s new stamps bring to this species. Each book provides information about Oregon spotted frogs, alongside lifelike art of one devouring a northern bluet \u2014 one of many insects in its diet. The endangered frog series also features Fowler\u2019s toad, a nocturnal species found along the north shore of Lake Erie that is high on WPC\u2019s priority list for future conservation projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<em>We are thrilled to have helped Canada Post provide the highest level of scientific accuracy on such a terrific project and bring awareness to the species we work with,\u201d says Dr. Woolaver. \u201cPreserving these frogs isn\u2019t just a moral obligation.
