Frogs and toads are members of the order Anura. Secondly, these amphibians are critical indicators of the health of our environment. Photo: Greater Vancouver Zoo<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Frogs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Generally speaking, though, when we think of\u00a0<strong>frogs<\/strong>, we generally picture what are called \u201ctrue frogs\u201d, members of the family\u00a0<em>Ranidae<\/em>, containing more than 400 species.<\/p>\n<p>These frogs have the characteristics of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>two bulging eyes<\/li>\n<li>strong, long, webbed hind feet that are adapted for leaping and swimming<\/li>\n<li>smooth or slimy skin (generally, frogs tend to like moister environments)<\/li>\n<li>frogs tend to lay eggs in clusters<\/li>\n<li>a frog will most likely being the water when you see it<\/li>\n<li>a frog is more timid than a toad, and might hop away immediately<\/li>\n<li>frogs have sticky long tongues they can use as lashes to reach out for food<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Frogs from this family can be found on every continent except Antarctica. They are referred to as the \u201ctrue frogs\u201d because of their generalized body form and life history. Photo: Mike Raude-Boyer\/Shutterstock<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Toads<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The term\u00a0<strong>toads<\/strong>\u00a0tends to refer to \u201ctrue toads\u201d, members of the family\u00a0<em>Bufonidae<\/em>, containing more than 300 species.<br \/>\nThese types of frogs have are characterized by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stubby bodies with short hind legs (for walking instead of hopping)<\/li>\n<li>Warty and dry skin (usually preferring dryer climates)<\/li>\n<li>paratoid (or poison) glands behind the eyes<\/li>\n<li>the chest cartilage of toads is distinctive from frogs.<\/li>\n<li>toads tend to lay eggs in long chains. (There are some toads,\u00a0<em>genera Nectophrynoides<\/em>, however, that are the only types of anurans to bear live young).<\/li>\n<li>a toad will most likely be on land and farther away from the water than a frog<\/li>\n<li>toads may stay still when approached, or hop a shorter distance than a frog<\/li>\n<li>toads do not have sticky long tongues of a frog, but must walk up to its food to devour it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>True toads can be found worldwide except in Australasia, polar regions, Madagascar, and Polynesia, though\u00a0<em>Bufo marinus<\/em>\u00a0has been artificially introduced into Australia and some South Pacific islands.<br \/>\nBesides Bufo, the family includes 25 genera, all of which, like the frogs, are anura.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- close
