Pendant des ann\u00e9es, j'ai pris soin de jeunes animaux bless\u00e9s et orphelins qui arrivent \u00e0 la clinique apr\u00e8s des d\u00e9buts souvent traumatiques.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chaque cas est unique, et bien que beaucoup de ces animaux soient d'esp\u00e8ces communes, chacun compte. Pourtant, il est rare que je rencontre un oiseau en danger critique en r\u00e9habilitation. Ainsi, la transition vers le travail avec les pie-gri\u00e8ches migratrices de l'Est dans le cadre du programme d'\u00e9levage de conservation et de rel\u00e2chement de CFC a \u00e9t\u00e9 un changement de perspective massif et humble. Ici, chaque oiseau est vital. Ils sont tomb\u00e9s des nids trop t\u00f4t, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 la proie de pr\u00e9dateurs, ou ont \u00e9t\u00e9 s\u00e9par\u00e9s de leurs parents pendant des p\u00e9riodes inconnues. Nous connaissons rarement leur \u00e2ge exact, leurs ant\u00e9c\u00e9dents alimentaires, ou s'ils ont re\u00e7u des soins parentaux appropri\u00e9s. Beaucoup arrivent d\u00e9shydrat\u00e9s, sous-aliment\u00e9s, ou portant une charge parasitaire lourde. Certains sont les plus faibles du groupe, luttant plus que leurs fr\u00e8res et s\u0153urs en meilleure sant\u00e9. Ils combattent peut-\u00eatre d\u00e9j\u00e0 des infections ou souffrent d'une gu\u00e9rison retard\u00e9e. Bref, leurs histoires commencent dans l'ombre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrastez cela avec nos pie-gri\u00e8ches migratrices \u00e9lev\u00e9es en conservation. <strong>Ces oiseaux nous arrivent de programmes d'\u00e9levage partenaires o\u00f9 ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 surveill\u00e9s m\u00e9ticuleusement depuis le premier jour<\/strong>. Leurs parents sont soigneusement appari\u00e9s par cartographie g\u00e9n\u00e9tique pour maximiser la diversit\u00e9 et assurer la sant\u00e9 \u00e0 long terme de la population. Nous connaissons leurs dates d'\u00e9closion, les progressions de poids, les jalons de d\u00e9veloppement, les vitamines et le r\u00e9gime alimentaire qu'ils ont re\u00e7us, et m\u00eame le type de soins parentaux qu'ils ont v\u00e9cus. Ils ont \u00e9galement re\u00e7u des vaccinations et des traitements antiparasitaires, leur donnant un avantage sur les oiseaux n\u00e9s dans la nature en renfor\u00e7ant leur sant\u00e9 avant leur arriv\u00e9e. Seuls les oiseaux les plus en forme sont s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9s pour venir \u00e0 notre site de rel\u00e2chement pour \u00eatre introduits dans la population sauvage, soigneusement choisis pour leur potentiel \u00e0 s'\u00e9panouir.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>En soins : de l\u2019approche active \u00e0 l\u2019approche passive\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travailler en r\u00e9habilitation est une exp\u00e9rience tr\u00e8s pratique. Les enclos sont con\u00e7us pour minimiser le stress avec des barri\u00e8res visuelles, mais cela signifie souvent que nous ne pouvons pas observer de loin. Donc, bien que nous r\u00e9duisions la manipulation autant que possible pour r\u00e9duire le stress, nous manipulons les oiseaux plus fr\u00e9quemment si n\u00e9cessaire pour surveiller les progr\u00e8s comme le poids, l'hydratation, la croissance des plumes et la gu\u00e9rison. Les diagnostics sont souvent n\u00e9cessaires pour combler les lacunes dues \u00e0 leurs histoires inconnues. Chaque jour est un \u00e9quilibre entre soutenir leur r\u00e9tablissement et essayer de ne pas induire un stress injustifi\u00e9 pour eux ou leurs compagnons d'enclos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En fort contraste, nos soins des pie-gri\u00e8ches \u00e9lev\u00e9es en conservation sont intentionnellement aussi peu interventionnistes que possible. Cependant, comme ces oiseaux arrivent en bonne sant\u00e9 et bien pr\u00e9par\u00e9s, nous avons plus de temps avec eux en main pour leurs \u00e9valuations initiales. \u00c0 l'arriv\u00e9e, ce bilan comprend le poids et les mesures morphom\u00e9triques, la pose de leurs bagues de couleur permanentes, puis nous prenons du recul. Leurs enclos sont de grandes structures en plein air qui simulent leur habitat alvar naturel environnant. Les oiseaux sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement retourn\u00e9s dans la zone o\u00f9 ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 trouv\u00e9s (si elle est appropri\u00e9e), mais \u00e0 partir de ce moment, nous ne savons g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement pas ce qui leur arrive. Se sont-ils int\u00e9gr\u00e9s ? Ont-ils surv\u00e9cu la premi\u00e8re semaine ? Ont-ils migr\u00e9 ? Nous avons fait tout ce que nous pouvions pour assurer le succ\u00e8s, mais il n'y a pas toujours de moyen de le savoir.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avec nos pie-gri\u00e8ches migratrices, nous avons le privil\u00e8ge du suivi. En plus d'\u00eatre tous \u00e9quip\u00e9s d'une combinaison unique de bagues de couleur, certains sont \u00e9galement munis de balises Motus, un incroyable syst\u00e8me de suivi qui nous permet de suivre leurs mouvements s'ils passent \u00e0 moins de 100 km de toute tour Motus au Canada et aux \u00c9tats-Unis. <strong>Ce syst\u00e8me nous fournit des donn\u00e9es inestimables sur la dispersion post-rel\u00e2chement, la synchronisation de la migration et les zones d'activit\u00e9.<\/strong> Ce type de suivi \u00e0 long terme est rare et immens\u00e9ment pr\u00e9cieux.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le processus de rel\u00e2chement progressif lui-m\u00eame est \u00e9galement soigneusement con\u00e7u. Une fois que les oiseaux sont comportementalement et physiologiquement pr\u00eats, nous ouvrons les portes de leurs enclos. Ils peuvent partir imm\u00e9diatement ou prendre leur temps. Nous continuons \u00e0 offrir de la nourriture et du soutien jusqu'\u00e0 ce qu'ils soient compl\u00e8tement partis, bien avant la migration. Ils ont la possibilit\u00e9 de rester sur le site et de s'acclimater lentement, quelque chose qui n'est pas possible dans la plupart des situations de r\u00e9habilitation de la faune.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>R\u00e9flexions\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le passage de la r\u00e9habilitation \u00e0 l'\u00e9levage de conservation n'a pas seulement chang\u00e9 ma fa\u00e7on de travailler, il a <strong>chang\u00e9 ma fa\u00e7on de penser<\/strong>. En r\u00e9habilitation, nous travaillons dur pour donner aux animaux une seconde chance, souvent malgr\u00e9 des d\u00e9buts difficiles. Dans la conservation de la pie-gri\u00e8che, nous leur donnons la meilleure <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">premi\u00e8re chance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les deux voies sont essentielles au bien-\u00eatre des esp\u00e8ces sauvages, et toutes deux m'ont appris la patience, la r\u00e9silience et un profond respect pour la vie des animaux sauvages et des personnes avec qui je travaille. Mais travailler avec ces oiseaux \u2014 ces petits pr\u00e9dateurs f\u00e9roces et en danger \u2014 me rappelle chaque jour que sauver une esp\u00e8ce ne consiste pas \u00e0 sauver un seul oiseau.
