On croyait qu'il avait disparu du Canada jusqu'en 2005, quand 15 damier ont \u00e9t\u00e9 observ\u00e9s sur l'\u00eele Denman dans les \u00eeles du golfe de la Colombie-Britannique. Depuis, CFC travaille \u00e0 soutenir le papillon en renfor\u00e7ant la population sauvage en Colombie-Britannique par la reproduction en conservation dans notre programme situ\u00e9 au zoo du Grand Vancouver, et en aidant les efforts des partenaires qui restaurent et maintiennent l'habitat de l'esp\u00e8ce.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><div  class='flex_column av-fxt2oh4-fd9ed2b49de7a703bbf3441a8bff1fe9 av_one_full  avia-builder-el-7  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_full  first flex_column_div  column-top-margin'     ><section  class='av_textblock_section av-moaeb5gb-0b1a93d69d0cafb397d7790fc3ac9590'   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Il y a un genre de silence particulier qui s'installe sur une falaise c\u00f4ti\u00e8re au d\u00e9but du printemps sur l'\u00cele Hornby (une petite \u00eele au large de l'\u00cele de Vancouver au Canada). L'oc\u00e9an est assez bruyant au loin pour que vous cessiez de l'entendre. En fin mars cette ann\u00e9e, nous avons rel\u00e2ch\u00e9 1 327 chenilles du damier de Taylor \u00e9lev\u00e9es en conservation dans les prairies restaur\u00e9es du parc provincial Helliwell et de ses environs, et on avait l'impression que l'endroit entier retenait son souffle avec nous. <strong>Ce rel\u00e2chage \u00e9tait en pr\u00e9paration depuis trois ans, et pour comprendre pourquoi cela compte, il faut suivre ces chenilles vers le pass\u00e9\u2026<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le papillon damier de Taylor (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphydryas editha taylori<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) est l'un des papillons les plus menac\u00e9s au Canada. Il volait autrefois au-dessus des prairies \u00e0 ch\u00eanes de Garry et des falaises c\u00f4ti\u00e8res depuis l'\u00eele de Vancouver jusqu'\u00e0 Washington et l'Oregon, aux \u00c9tats-Unis. Puis les prairies ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es, les plantes h\u00f4tes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 remplac\u00e9es par des esp\u00e8ces envahissantes, et les papillons ont disparu, population par population. Sur l'\u00cele Hornby, le damier de Taylor a \u00e9t\u00e9 extirp\u00e9 localement en 1996 et a disparu de Helliwell pendant pr\u00e8s de trois d\u00e9cennies. Notre \u00e9quipe de terrain a pass\u00e9 sept jours \u00e0 marcher et \u00e0 chercher dans les mares saisonni\u00e8res et les sols d\u00e9tremp\u00e9s \u00e0 la recherche de ces petites larves \u00e9pineuses qui se nourrissent en groupe de v\u00e9ronique \u00e0 \u00e9cus (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veronica scutellata<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Nous avons trouv\u00e9 dix grappes. Nous avons collect\u00e9 130 individus repr\u00e9sentant neuf lign\u00e9es maternelles distinctes \u2014 chacune d'un coin diff\u00e9rent du paysage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cette g\u00e9ographie \u00e9tait plus importante qu'il n'y para\u00eet.  Les lign\u00e9es maternelles que nous avons collect\u00e9es variaient de grappes \u00e0 seulement 45 m\u00e8tres d'\u00e9cart \u00e0 celles s\u00e9par\u00e9es par pr\u00e8s de 11 kilom\u00e8tres. Choisir les plus grosses larves. \u00c9lever les lign\u00e9es qui grandissent le plus vite. Maximiser les effectifs. Nous avons d\u00e9lib\u00e9r\u00e9ment fait le contraire. En 2025, CFC, en collaboration avec l\u2019\u00e9quipe d\u2019\u00e9levage du Greater Vancouver Zoo, avons \u00e9lev\u00e9 ces 130 larves pendant leur diapause et avons vu 87 adultes \u00e9merger avec succ\u00e8s (se transformer en papillons). Cela repr\u00e9sente un taux de survie de 70%, plus de treize fois ce que ces papillons r\u00e9ussiraient dans la nature. Mais quand est venu le moment de mettre en place les cages d'\u00e9levage, nous nous sommes engag\u00e9s \u00e0 ce que nous avons appel\u00e9 une strat\u00e9gie de \u00ab diversit\u00e9 maximale \u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cela signifiait garder chaque lign\u00e9e maternelle dans le bassin de reproduction, y compris les trois qui avaient mal perform\u00e9 en captivit\u00e9. Exclure les lign\u00e9es faibles aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 une forme silencieuse de s\u00e9lection artificielle \u2013 r\u00e9compensant les traits qui fonctionnent dans un zoo mais qui ne fonctionnent pas n\u00e9cessairement sur une falaise balay\u00e9e par les vents. \u00c0 la place, nous avons accoupl\u00e9 des fondateurs \u00e9loign\u00e9s (plus de 5 km d'\u00e9cart \u00e0 la collection) pour g\u00e9n\u00e9rer de nouvelles combinaisons g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques, et nous avons pr\u00e9serv\u00e9 certains accouplements de voisins proches (moins de 500 m d'\u00e9cart) pour garder intacts les g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques complexes localement co-adapt\u00e9s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le r\u00e9sultat : environ 4 000 \u0153ufs pondus, environ 2 500 larves entr\u00e9es en diapause, et chacune de ces neuf lign\u00e9es maternelles fondatrices port\u00e9e dans la g\u00e9n\u00e9ration suivante. En 2023, l'\u00e9quipe y a rel\u00e2ch\u00e9 1 476 chenilles \u2013 la premi\u00e8re r\u00e9introduction d\u00e9lib\u00e9r\u00e9e de ce type dans le parc. En mars 2024, nous avons confirm\u00e9 que plus de 230 de ces larves avaient r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 \u00e9merg\u00e9 de la diapause hivernale, la premi\u00e8re completion document\u00e9e du cycle de vie du damier de Taylor \u00e0 Helliwell depuis son extirpation locale en 1996. La restauration de l'habitat fonctionnait. Les papillons rentraient \u00e0 la maison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Le rel\u00e2chage de cette ann\u00e9e s'appuie sur cette fondation.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Les chenilles que nous avons plac\u00e9es sur les plantes h\u00f4tes dans les zones restaur\u00e9es du parc sont la cohorte g\u00e9n\u00e9tiquement <\/span><b>la plus large que nous ayons jamais rel\u00e2ch\u00e9e.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Elles portent des g\u00e8nes de neuf m\u00e8res sauvages, m\u00e9lang\u00e9s gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une conception d'accouplement spatialement inform\u00e9e, s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9s non pas pour les traits les plus faciles, mais pour la plus large bo\u00eete \u00e0 outils possible afin de faire face \u00e0 tout ce que Helliwell leur lance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nous avons regard\u00e9 les premi\u00e8res chenilles commencer \u00e0 se nourrir presque imm\u00e9diatement.
