According to the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), more than 40 amphibian and reptile species are currently threatened or endangered. More than a third of these species need some form of hands-on intervention to survive. Our national reptile and amphibian program develops and promotes best practices for four key conservation techniques: translocation, headstarting, conservation breeding and in-situ interventions. We will maximize the impact of groups across the continent that are working to protect these highly threatened species.\u2060<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><div  class='flex_column av-164xcby-70b91c84aa376aadb48b9695a29203ee av_one_full  avia-builder-el-7  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_full  first flex_column_div  column-top-margin'     ><section  class='av_textblock_section av-baurt72-87c5d9707226b178de9bfa9a5318edf7'   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depuis sa <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/food-inspection-agency\/news\/2017\/08\/hemlock_woolly_adelgidconfirmedinnovascotia.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d\u00e9tection en 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, un ennemi silencieux mais mortel des sapins pruche sillonne les for\u00eats du sud de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse. Le puceron lanig\u00e8re de la pruche (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adelges tsugae<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), aussi appel\u00e9 simplement <strong>PLP, est un insecte qui se nourrit de s\u00e8ve et peut causer des dommages \u00e9tendus et la mort aux sapins pruche en 5 \u00e0 10 ans<\/strong>. Pour tenter de ralentir la propagation du PLP envahisseur et prot\u00e9ger les for\u00eats de pruches, des insecticides sont appliqu\u00e9s aux arbres. Maintenant, apr\u00e8s une s\u00e9rie de traitements, on se pose des questions sur les effets de ces insecticides au-del\u00e0 de l'esp\u00e8ce vis\u00e9e. Un groupe d'animaux potentiellement affect\u00e9s sont les amphibiens. Une esp\u00e8ce commune de l'est du Canada qui pourrait bien indiquer ces effets chez les salamandres de mani\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9rale est la <strong>salamandre ray\u00e9e<\/strong>, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plethodon cinereus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Le laboratoire d'\u00e9cologie int\u00e9grative Riley de l'Universit\u00e9 Mount Allison \u00e9tudie actuellement si le traitement par insecticide pour le PLP a des impacts sur ces petits amphibiens, pourtant abondants. Ce projet fait partie d'une collaboration qui comprend le Service canadien des for\u00eats, l'Universit\u00e9 Acadia, Environnement et Changement climatique Canada et l'Universit\u00e9 de Saskatchewan pour comprendre les changements \u00e9cosyst\u00e9miques caus\u00e9s par une esp\u00e8ce envahissante et un contr\u00f4le chimique. Nous sommes reconnaissants d'avoir une \u00e9quipe si merveilleuse concentr\u00e9e sur ce sujet, car comprendre les impacts \u00e9cologiques d'une esp\u00e8ce envahissante n'est pas une mince affaire!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nous avons maintenant commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 collecter des donn\u00e9es sur ces salamandres. Notre saison de terrain, qui s'\u00e9tend du printemps \u00e0 l'automne 2026, a d\u00e9but\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re excitante et rapide alors que nous nous rendions \u00e0<strong> plusieurs for\u00eats de pruches du sud de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse<\/strong>. Chaque exp\u00e9dition nous m\u00e8ne \u00e0 des endroits magnifiques, \u00e0 des rencontres avec de dr\u00f4les de petites cr\u00e9atures et \u00e0 de nouveaux d\u00e9fis. Les sites eux-m\u00eames sont constitu\u00e9s d\u2019alignements de planches de couverture, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire de petites planches rectangulaires en pruche, qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 install\u00e9es dans chacune des for\u00eats que nous avons \u00e9tudi\u00e9es l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 dernier.  Ces planches servent de refuge aux salamandres, un peu comme les billes ou les rochers. Les for\u00eats o\u00f9 nous travaillons ont soit \u00e9t\u00e9 trait\u00e9es aux insecticides, soit laiss\u00e9es non trait\u00e9es pour le PLP. Pour les relev\u00e9s des matrices de planches de couvert, nous passons nos journ\u00e9es \u00e0 nous rendre sur les sites et \u00e0 regarder sous les planches, esp\u00e9rant capturer des salamandres pour nos mesures. Parmi les mesures que nous prenons, il y a la taille et la masse, qui peuvent \u00eatre utilis\u00e9es pour \u00e9valuer la condition corporelle des salamandres. Les salamandres sont aussi marqu\u00e9es avec des \u00e9tiquettes de couleur, que nous injectons juste sous leur peau sans leur causer aucun pr\u00e9judice. Apr\u00e8s marquage, chaque salamandre est retourn\u00e9e \u00e0 sa planche de couvert et nous esp\u00e9rons la retrouver! L'\u00e9chantillonnage du microclimat implique de collecter des donn\u00e9es sur les conditions environnementales sous les planches de couvert, car cela refl\u00e8tera les conditions que les salamandres exp\u00e9rimentent et nous permettra de faire des comparaisons entre les traitements. Cela se fait en mesurant des variables comme la temp\u00e9rature, l'humidit\u00e9 du sol et le pH sous les planches. Nous mesurons aussi la couverture du couvert forestier, car le PLP affecte gravement la croissance et la r\u00e9tention des aiguilles de pruche. L'infestation par le PLP peut affecter les conditions foresti\u00e8res, tout comme le traitement aux insecticides, et les deux pourraient affecter les salamandres. La prise de ces mesures suppl\u00e9mentaires lors de l'\u00e9valuation des salamandres nous aidera \u00e0 d\u00e9m\u00ealer ce qui pourrait causer les diff\u00e9rences de populations de salamandres entre les traitements forestiers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pour la deuxi\u00e8me partie de notre travail de terrain, les essais comportementaux, nous retournons dans un plus petit sous-ensemble de sites pour \u00e9tudier le comportement des salamandres entre les for\u00eats trait\u00e9es aux insecticides et les for\u00eats non trait\u00e9es. Les essais ont trois volets : activit\u00e9, antiprogression et r\u00e9flexe de redressement. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/life13061418\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les insecticides utilis\u00e9s contre le PLP peuvent avoir des impacts n\u00e9gatifs sur la locomotion et la capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9agir aux pr\u00e9dateurs chez des animaux comme les poissons et les amphibiens aquatiques,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mais nous ne savons pas si la m\u00eame chose est vraie pour la salamandre ray\u00e9e, qui est un amphibien compl\u00e8tement terrestre. Pendant les essais d'activit\u00e9, les salamandres sont plac\u00e9es dans une ar\u00e8ne avec une cam\u00e9ra d'enregistrement au-dessus et laiss\u00e9es libres de se d\u00e9placer. Ensuite, elles entrent dans l'essai antiprogression, pendant lequel les salamandres sont l\u00e9g\u00e8rement piqu\u00e9es pour susciter une r\u00e9action d'\u00e9chappement. Finalement, nous testons leur r\u00e9flexe de redressement en retournant les salamandres sur le dos \u00e0 plusieurs reprises tout en surveillant la vitesse \u00e0 laquelle elles peuvent se retourner. Parfois, les salamandres s'\u00e9chappent pendant l'essai d'activit\u00e9 et nous restons \u00e0 nous demander comment elles ont r\u00e9ussi! Elle a toujours aim\u00e9 la biologie et a entretenu des int\u00e9r\u00eats larges dans les syst\u00e8mes vivants bien au-del\u00e0 des \u00e9tudes de premier cycle, jusqu'\u00e0 ce qu'elle r\u00e9alise que l'\u00e9cologie \u00e9tait sa vocation. Elle s'int\u00e9resse particuli\u00e8rement \u00e0 la fa\u00e7on dont les environnements changeants affectent les communaut\u00e9s animales et aux r\u00e9percussions au niveau de l'\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me de ces changements. Mathilde poursuit maintenant sa passion pour l'apprentissage en poursuivant une ma\u00eetrise \u00e9tudiant les effets indirects des pesticides sur les salamandres dans les for\u00eats de pruches de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse. Quand elle n'est pas occup\u00e9e par la recherche, Mathilde aime se d\u00e9tendre avec une s\u00e9ance de yoga ou s'\u00e9vader avec un bon livre.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n\n<style
