Here\u2019s what a typical day looks like and why it matters!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Field Safety Tips<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong>Before any shrike surveying begins, staying safe in the field is key. WPC surveys two main areas: <\/span><b>Carden Alvar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> et <\/span><b>Napanee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the last two places in Canada where eastern loggerhead shrikes reliably come back to breed. WPC has mapped out patches of suitable habitat in both regions, mostly conservation lands and cattle pastures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shrikes are picky about where they live. They need:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Open grasslands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for hunting (they spot prey from above and swoop down to catch it).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Scattered bushes and trees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for nesting and perching while they scan for prey.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other helpful features include <\/span><b>short grass<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (so prey can\u2019t hide easily) and <\/span><b>distance from human disturbance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like busy roads because shrikes can be skittish towards human presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally during surveys habitat is assessed to determine if it is still suitable because habitat changes over time. Barkwell.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div><div  class='flex_column av-81gbx4d-2baca5d02a76f1674f3e0fd16b674acd av_one_full  avia-builder-el-19  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_full  first flex_column_div  column-top-margin'     ><p><section  class='av_textblock_section av-msf3lkgy-9df25e513d9a1874b0ec6723382acb3c'   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>How do you find a shrike?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding a shrike is part skill, part patience, and part luck.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Watch their favourite perches.<br \/>\n<\/b>Shrikes love sitting on the tops of trees and bushes, especially dead trees with a good view! If you see a bird swoop to the ground and then pop back up to a perch, that\u2019s classic shrike hunting behaviour.<\/li>\n<li><b>Listen carefully.<br \/>\n<\/b>Shrikes don\u2019t sing often, but you might hear an alarm call if you get too close, or the begging calls of fledglings waiting for food. These sounds can help us zero in on shrikes.<\/li>\n<li><b>Use call-playbacks (only if you\u2019re trained)<br \/>\n<\/b>Call\u2011playbacks are recordings of shrike calls used by trained conservation staff to attract shrikes toward an area. They\u2019re helpful, but they must be used responsibly, never by casual birders. Playbacks can accidentally draw birds toward predators or roads, and frequent use can stress them out.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-msf3n2z0-39449427c004da39800416a5c3ed41db'   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Confirming we&#8217;ve found a shrike!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once we spot a bird that might be a shrike, grab your binoculars or scope; shrikes don\u2019t usually let us get close. Remember they don\u2019t like human presence!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A mostly <\/span><b>grey body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with black and white markings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A bold <\/span><b>black mask<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across their eyes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>large head<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the name \u201cloggerhead\u201d literally means \u201cbig head\u201d!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a deeper dive check out WPC\u2019s blog post on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepreservation.ca\/fr\/blog\/how-to-id-a-loggerhead-shrike\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comment identifier une pie-gri\u00e8che migratrice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And if you do find a shrike, keep your distance, stay out of sight (behind a bush), and remain quiet. A bird band is a small ring placed on a bird\u2019s leg. Shrike bands include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><b>Silver band<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a unique identifying number.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One to three <\/span><b>colour bands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so individuals can be identified from far away.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a banded shrike is seen again, it can tell us where it migrated for winter and whether it returned to the same breeding area the next year. During the banding process we also take a blood sample and feather sample. These samples give us insight into a bird\u2019s genetics and can even tell us where birds migrate! This helps determine how many nestlings there are and how old they might be. Nest checks should only be done by trained professionals, doing them incorrectly can cause parents to abandon the nest.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-msf3u6hv-faedbddeaa5cd3baa5dda78e98be3e29'   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Why do we do all this?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitoring wildlife helps us understand<\/span><b> population health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: how many individuals there are, whether the population is growing or shrinking, and what threats they face (like habitat loss or new diseases). It also helps us understand normal behaviour for a species.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Eastern Loggerhead Shrike Recovery Program, monitoring guides other parts of the project, including the release of captive\u2011bred shrikes and land stewardship efforts.
