Chaque ann\u00e9e, CFC s\u00e9lectionne un biologiste d\u00e9vou\u00e9 parmi des candidats \u00e0 travers le Canada pour entreprendre un cours de 3 mois \u00e0 la Durrell Conservation Academy au Royaume-Uni, suivi d'un stage de 6 mois sur l'\u00eele Maurice dans l'Oc\u00e9an Indien. C'est une occasion unique pour les jeunes Canadiens d'apprendre directement comment fonctionnent les programmes de r\u00e9tablissement de la faune les plus r\u00e9ussis au monde, et de ramener ces connaissances et cette exp\u00e9rience pour renforcer la capacit\u00e9 de conservation du Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Pour la toute premi\u00e8re fois, CFC propose ce stage \u00e0 deux biologistes. Nos No\u00e9 2026 sont Jenna Kissel \u2013 la 35<sup>e <\/sup>No\u00e9 du Canada de la CFC, et Daryn Farrant \u2013 le 36<sup>e <\/sup>No\u00e9 du Canada de la CFC. Merci Pat et Alan Koval de soutenir mon parcours et de m'avoir aid\u00e9e \u00e0 voir les projets incroyables dont nous avons parl\u00e9 dans le cours DESMAN.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-msxl4jrc-ab8d7fae709bbaac924ab8dfee9d7c94'   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L'\u00c9cosse m'a sembl\u00e9 famili\u00e8re de la mauvaise fa\u00e7on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les collines ondulantes, les zones humides, les for\u00eats qui remontent les vall\u00e9es. Par moments, \u00e7a ressemblait tellement \u00e0 certaines parties du Canada que mon cerveau s'attendait \u00e0 y trouver autre chose aussi. Un ours se d\u00e9pla\u00e7ant entre les arbres. Des traces de loup sur un sentier boueux. Un signe qu'il y avait encore un grand pr\u00e9dateur quelque part dans le paysage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mais il n'y avait rien.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ce sentiment \u00e9trange, combin\u00e9 au fait de conduire du mauvais c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la route, donnait \u00e0 toute l'exp\u00e9rience un air vaguement de Twilight Zone. Tout semblait presque juste, mais pas tout \u00e0 fait.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Il m'a fallu un moment pour comprendre ce qui me semblait si inqui\u00e9tant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Il manquait quelque chose.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Au domaine de Dalnacardoch et dans une grande partie des Highlands, nous avons appris <strong>l'histoire longue de la pers\u00e9cution des pr\u00e9dateurs et de la d\u00e9forestation \u00e0 travers l'\u00c9cosse<\/strong>. Les loups ont \u00e9t\u00e9 chass\u00e9s jusqu'\u00e0 l'extinction il y a des si\u00e8cles. Les for\u00eats ont \u00e9t\u00e9 ras\u00e9es pour le bois d'\u0153uvre, l'agriculture, et g\u00e9r\u00e9es plus tard comme des domaines de chasse au cerf et \u00e0 la grouse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sans grands pr\u00e9dateurs, les populations de cerfs se sont \u00e9tendues bien au-del\u00e0 de ce que les for\u00eats en voie de r\u00e9tablissement pouvaient naturellement soutenir.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Et les cerfs adorent manger les jeunes arbres.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dans de nombreuses parties des Highlands, les semis ont \u00e0 peine la chance de pousser avant d'\u00eatre brout\u00e9s. On peut se promener dans des zones qui semblent sauvages \u00e0 premi\u00e8re vue, mais une fois qu'on commence \u00e0 faire attention, on remarque des classes d'\u00e2ge manquantes dans la for\u00eat. Venant du Canada, j'ai l'habitude de penser aux for\u00eats comme des syst\u00e8mes fa\u00e7onn\u00e9s par les perturbations, les pr\u00e9dateurs et le changement constant. En \u00c9cosse, on peut encore voir ces processus essayer de se produire, mais beaucoup des \u00e9l\u00e9ments sont disparus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Et pourtant, il y a des gens qui travaillent \u00e0 r\u00e9tablir une partie de cet \u00e9quilibre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c0 travers les Highlands, <strong>des projets de renaturation tentent de reconnecter des habitats fragment\u00e9s, de r\u00e9duire la pression du broutage, de restaurer les tourbi\u00e8res et de permettre aux for\u00eats de se r\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9rer naturellement.<\/strong> Non pas en essayant de recr\u00e9er une nature vierge parfaite, mais en reconstruisant des processus \u00e9cologiques qui manquaient depuis des si\u00e8cles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C'est un travail lent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parfois, \u00e7a semble spectaculaire dans les manchettes, mais sur le terrain, \u00e7a ressemble souvent \u00e0 quelque chose de bien plus discret. Une cl\u00f4ture anti-cerfs. Un pi\u00e8ge photographique. De minuscules semis prot\u00e9g\u00e9s juste assez longtemps pour finalement pousser plus haut que la hauteur de broutage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les Highlands portent encore les marques de ce qui leur a \u00e9t\u00e9 retir\u00e9. On peut encore voir les cicatrices des drains utilis\u00e9s pour ass\u00e9cher les tourbi\u00e8res sur les collines, m\u00eame dans les zones restaur\u00e9es. Elle est titulaire d'un baccalaur\u00e9at sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 en sciences biologiques de l'Universit\u00e9 du Manitoba, o\u00f9 elle s'est concentr\u00e9e sur l'\u00e9cologie de la restauration et le r\u00e9tablissement des \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes des prairies. Avant de rejoindre la CFC, Daryn a travaill\u00e9 avec Parcs Canada au Parc national des Prairies, o\u00f9 elle a dirig\u00e9 des programmes de surveillance des chev\u00eaches des terriers et de la sant\u00e9 riveraine, coordonn\u00e9 le travail sur le terrain, la gestion des donn\u00e9es et les relev\u00e9s sur les esp\u00e8ces en p\u00e9ril. Elle apporte une exp\u00e9rience de terrain vari\u00e9e en gestion des esp\u00e8ces envahissantes et en surveillance \u00e9cologique, et elle est passionn\u00e9e par la gestion \u00e0 long terme et rendre la science accessible \u00e0 des audiences diverses. Daryn est bilingue en anglais et en fran\u00e7ais et est enthousiaste \u00e0 contribuer au r\u00e9tablissement des esp\u00e8ces menac\u00e9es au Canada par son travail avec
