itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>Qu'est-ce que le programme de No\u00e9 du Canada ?<\/strong> Depuis 1988, le programme No\u00e9 du Canada offre aux biologistes de la conservation au Canada une opportunit\u00e9 unique. Chaque ann\u00e9e, CFC s\u00e9lectionne un biologiste d\u00e9vou\u00e9 parmi des candidats \u00e0 travers le Canada pour entreprendre un cours de 3 mois \u00e0 la Durrell Conservation Academy au Royaume-Uni, suivi d'un stage de 6 mois sur l'\u00eele Maurice dans l'Oc\u00e9an Indien. C'est une occasion unique pour les jeunes Canadiens d'apprendre directement comment fonctionnent les programmes de r\u00e9tablissement de la faune les plus r\u00e9ussis au monde, et de ramener ces connaissances et cette exp\u00e9rience pour renforcer la capacit\u00e9 de conservation du Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Pour la toute premi\u00e8re fois, CFC propose ce stage \u00e0 deux biologistes. Nos No\u00e9 2026 sont Jenna Kissel \u2013 la 35<sup>e <\/sup>No\u00e9 du Canada de la CFC, et Daryn Farrant \u2013 le 36<sup>e <\/sup>No\u00e9 du Canada de la CFC. Les deux biologistes partagent leurs exp\u00e9riences et comment ils les appliqueront \u00e0 leur retour au Canada. <strong>Merci \u00e0 la Alan &amp; Patricia Koval Foundation pour leurs nombreuses ann\u00e9es de soutien au programme Canada\u2019s New Noah et pour avoir fait plus que le n\u00e9cessaire en soutenant deux stages Koval Foundation New Noah en 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><div  class='flex_column av-14e6c13-85c64119aff91847f6d0c15a7dca0bd7 av_one_full  avia-builder-el-7  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_full  first flex_column_div  column-top-margin'     ><section  class='av_textblock_section av-mv70mu4x-703a5f78ca0ef7dd3fcac62f1536a79d'   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to a delay in the approval of my Mauritian work visa, I unexpectedly had some time to explore other conservation projects on my way to Mauritius. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thank you to Pat and Alan Koval for supporting my journey and helping me see some of these amazing conservation projects along the way!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\nLevel 0: My Least Favourite Part of <\/b><b><i>Zoboomafoo<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every young biologist has that one nature show that helped brainwash them into becoming a biologist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For me, that show was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoboomafoo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I loved the animals, the adventures, the conservation messages\u2026 but there was one problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Zabu.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have always been a little scared of primates. Not just <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a little<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, actually. I mean specifically the kind of fear I have for Jack the monkey from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pirates of the Caribbean<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You know the one. The one that looks like it knows exactly what you did last summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an ecologist, I know that every species has a role in an ecosystem. I care deeply about wildlife, and I\u2019m a vegetarian because I care about living things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ok so I know it\u2019s kinda silly, me being scared of primates when I think prairie rattlesnakes are just the cutest lil guys ever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But lemurs?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>They are so scary.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, there\u2019s a problem with being afraid of wildlife when you want to work in conservation. Fear of an animal can easily become discomfort, discomfort can become apathy, and apathy can eventually become persecution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, if I wanted to work in conservation, I figured I probably needed to get over my fear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enter: the lemur training arc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Level 1: The Lemurs of Jersey Zoo<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My first step was Jersey Zoo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During my time at the Durrell Endangered Species Management course, I quickly became very familiar with the black-and-white ruffed lemurs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mostly because they <\/span><b>screamed.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every night. Right outside our hostel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I could hear them calling as I was trying to fall asleep, which was perhaps not the relaxing bedtime soundtrack I had imagined for my conservation training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But overtime, I got used to it. The calling lemurs became part of my nightly routine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I saw the ring-tailed lemurs at Lemur Lake during our lunch breaks. My fellow classmates would rave about how they were so cute and how much they loved the lemurs. Even having a movie night in the hostel living room one night as a break from our studying. Even my friends back home on the prairies love King Julian and would listen to the sound track all summer long while we were spraying invasive weeds. Farrant.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div><div  class='flex_column av-8ufs9qf-bd937293b3eb2bbeb03bd9a8bfb60530 av_one_full  avia-builder-el-13  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_full  first flex_column_div  column-top-margin'     ><section  class='av_textblock_section av-8oignon-b6b7932472052fc4f3a10d901fd57f09'   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p><b>Level 2: Madagascar<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My next stop was Madagascar, where I volunteered with GERP \u2014 Groupe d\u2019\u00c9tude et de Recherche sur les Primates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This time, I wasn&#8217;t looking at lemurs from behind a zoo barrier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was in the forest looking <\/span><b>for them<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our job was to walk through the forest and record the different lemur species we encountered, helping build an inventory of the species present in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything felt different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was in a forest I had never been in, in a country very different from the environments I was used to working in. I was relying on my friend and our local guide to navigate us through the forest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, I\u2019m the person who wants to look at the map, plan the route and figure out where we are going.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, I was completely out of my element. There were <\/span><b>seven.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four quickly became seven as more lemurs appeared, and at one point they all piled together into one giant ball of fluffy lemur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They jumped around. They lounged around. They groomed each other. For a few minutes, everything was peaceful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then suddenly\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ALERT.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A mouse lemur appeared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire group immediately went from relaxed to:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>EVERYONE PANIC!\u00a0 SCREAMING COMMENCES!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My heart started racing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven black-and-white ruffed lemurs began vocalizing together, creating this incredibly loud, rough chorus of calls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was, subjectively, terrifying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But standing there watching them was also fascinating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wasn&#8217;t just looking at &#8220;scary lemurs&#8221; anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was watching a social group respond to another animal entering their space. We are constantly put into situations where we don&#8217;t know everything. We work with unfamiliar species, unfamiliar ecosystems, unfamiliar people and unfamiliar problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that&#8217;s okay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, I think it&#8217;s important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most valuable things I have learned through my conservation experiences is to stay humble and ask for help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of us can be experts at everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conservation needs engineers, biologists, communicators, educators, managers, researchers and people who can do a little bit of everything. Being a jack-of-all-trades can be incredibly valuable in a field where the world is so diverse and dynamic that no one person can ever master all of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m not going to pretend that my heart doesn&#8217;t race every time I see a primate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But lemurs have definitely become the least scary members of that category for me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And when I look at them now, I don&#8217;t just see an unfamiliar animal.
