The eastern loggerhead shrike in Eastern Canada is critically endangered with only 70 birds left in the wild. But it’s not too late to turn things around for the loggerhead shrike here in Canada. Every year our Eastern Loggerhead Shrike Recovery Program raises 100+ shrike chicks to release into the wild population.

We need your help to give these chicks the best chance at life! Sponsor a baby shrike for $60, and you’ll help us care for that chick until we can release it into the wild. As a shrike sponsor you’ll receive:

  • A custom certificate showing that you are a sponsor of one of our 2018 shrike chicks
  • Regular email updates with exclusive details about how the chicks are doing
  • Access to videos and photos that are shared with our shrike community
  • Your name listed on our website (optional)

We understand that a one-time gift of $60 does not suit everyone’s giving needs. If you would like to help in other ways, click one of the options below. We appreciate every type of gift.

About the Eastern Loggerhead Shrike

  • Ontario is home to one of twelve subspecies of loggerhead shrike, Lanius ludovicianus alvarensis
  • The Ontario population has been in steady decline since the 1990s, with only 70 birds left in the wild today
  • Even though recovery work has prevented the species from disappearing, more work is needed to save it
  • Our shrike program uses conservation breeding to augment the wild population
  • Each year we raise 100+ chicks between our two programs at the Toronto Zoo and African Lion Safari
