L'approche « blue racer is among the most menacés snake species in Canada. Once found in southern Ontario, this species has been disparue from mainland Canada since the early 1980’s, primarily due to habitat conversion for residential and agricultural development. Their Canadian range is now restricted solely to Pelee Island in western Lake Erie. On the island, much of this species’ preferred habitats are protected, including grasslands, alvars, and open woodlands. On Pelee Island, blue racer habitats frequently overlap with that of the endangered eastern foxsnake.
Project
WPC joined the collaborative effort towards the conservation of the remaining blue racer population on Pelee Island in 2019, building upon previous habitat restoration efforts on the island. The aim of this project is to combat further declines in blue racer abundance and ensure that population’s long-term persistence. Recovery efforts on Pelee Island include:
