Dr. Axel Moehrenschlager is Director of the Small Cats Program and Conservation Translocations at Panthera. He did his Ph.D. in Zoology and Wildlife Conservation at the University of Oxford in 2002 and his B.Sc. at the University of Alberta.

Axel chairs the IUCN Species Survival Commission’s Conservation Translocation Specialist Group, a role he has held since 2014, and holds adjunct and research positions at the University of Calgary, Clemson University, and the University of Oxford’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit. He also serves on advisory boards for Re:wild, the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, and the Conservation Collective, and has judged the St. Andrews Prize for the Environment.

He has spent over two decades in wildlife conservation leadership, including nearly 23 years with the Calgary Zoo and Wilder Institute, where he founded and led the Centre for Conservation Research and later served as Director of Conservation & Science.
