Staff Photo Contest
At Wildlife Preservation Canada, our team spends much of the year out in nature—whether trekking through fields to survey bumble bees or standing riverside during a turtle release, they’re constantly surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and incredible wildlife.
Whether they capture their images on a cellphone or on a DSLR camera, we want to celebrate the amazing photos they take every year. We’re excited to share some of the best photos from this year’s staff photo contest. Enjoy these unique glimpses into our team’s fieldwork!
2025 Winner
Barred owl by Jag Athwal, Assistant Biologist for the Taylor’s Checkerspot Recovery Program.
Jag has been working on eastern Vancouver Island, B.C., collecting founder Taylor’s checkerspot butterfly larvae to help establish a genetically diverse and self-sustaining population through Wildlife Preservation Canada’s conservation breeding program.
During an early spring morning in the field, Jag heard a group of robins giving out a sharp alarm call – drawing his attention to the barred owl perched quietly on a branch, framed by soft light filtering through the canopy. This was a moment where science, nature, and chance intertwined. Serving as a reminder for why protecting biodiversity matters and how interconnected recovery efforts truly are.
